The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)
Program Explained
The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)
The VEU program is a state-wide scheme by the Victorian Government in efforts to help Australian homes access more affordable hot water using clean energy. By upgrading to energy efficient appliances from old and inefficient ones, Victorian homes are able to enjoy hot water without the burden of high energy bills.
Under the VEU program, households are able to make different upgrades such as lighting, hot water heat pump, air conditioners and solar. All these upgrades are designed to encourage the usage of renewable energy which will reduce Australia’s dependence on fossil fuel combustion for energy.
Lighting Upgrades
Industrial and Commercial LED light upgrades are available for businesses. Upgrading from fluorescent and incandescent lights to LEDs can significantly reduce energy consumption as LEDs are far more energy efficient and low maintenance.
Hot Water Heat Pump
Most Victorian homes have traditional gas or electric water heaters that were installed around 10-20 years ago. While they were a reliable option back in the day, they are no longer sustainable to run long term due to the rising costs of gas, as well as their significant impact on the environment from harmful GHG emissions.
Modern heat pumps are much more energy efficient – which means they use less energy than a gas water heater to heat the same volume of water. Under the VEU program, eligible homes are able to claim different hot water rebates such as the Solar Victoria Hot Water Rebates.

Air Conditioner Upgrades
Heating accounts for a large part of household bills especially during winter. With gas prices rising, some homes are having to sacrifice their comfort in order to keep energy bills low.
Reverse cycle air conditioners can use electricity efficiently to provide both heating and cooling, making them a cost-effective solution year-round. Compared to gas heating, they consume significantly less energy, helping households stay warm without the high costs. With energy-efficient technology and government rebates available, upgrading to a reverse cycle air conditioner can be a smart investment for comfort and savings.
Solar Upgrades
Solar energy is what really ties all the upgrades together – generating your own electricity to power the energy efficient appliances in your home completes the home-electrification, which means you will no longer have to rely on gas.
By upgrading lighting, hot water systems, air conditioners, and solar, Victorians can lower their reliance on fossil fuels and enjoy long-term savings on energy bills. With rising gas prices, solutions like reverse cycle air conditioners and heat pumps offer a cost-effective way to stay comfortable while reducing environmental impact.
